God’s-Eye View

Toby F. Coley

This poem says nothing you haven’t heard before.
It doesn’t use words in a new way.
You’re hoping for some turn of phrase
or maybe a striking image, even better
a metaphor that carries through lines
unfolding its meaning slowly and carefully
until…what? Revelation, Epiphany, Miracle.

Sorry. Those are reserved for God.
Good news though: he’s liberal
with His grace. Every day in fact
in some small parish or megachurch
he visits and even more scandalous,
he says, “eat me,” “drink me up,”
“there’s more—infinitely more
where that came from.”
