Waiting for Tomatoes

Jessica Whipple

In the garden
where a writer works
the ground is hard

Though the ground is hard
ideas push through
in perfect pairs

In perfect pairs
bootprints stamp soil
along every row

Every row and everything looks different
after a brainstorm
scatters thoughts

Scattered thoughts like magnolia leaves
rouse frantic fingers
to revise, pull weeds

In the garden
a writer waits
for that
ripe
red
β€œYes.”
