Good Friday

Good Friday

Good Friday

Matthew D. Blanton

If you'd imagined it right
you would have imagined the dirt
the soot, the stench, and the un-remarkableness
of it all

The crackle of the fire
The small, seasoned slave girl
towering over the man who dared to deny
his tribal God

A shot rang out and scattered
the rabid, desperate dogs
Into the dark passageways of this
forgettable town

In the light of dim torches
the bureaucratic cogs
of a dominated people
cling to power
