I came upon Ekstasis on the recommendation of the poet D. S. Martin, and was taken by the magazine’s clear attention to beauty in language and image. The work that Ekstasis does has been valuable precisely because of that commitment to beauty, an element of our Creator’s nature that is often neglected amidst the pragmatics of running programmes and unpacking scripture. The poems, essays, and photos that inhabit Ekstasis help to broker space for an interaction with the Holy Spirit that proceeds with the knowledge that divine mystery is to be embraced rather than ignored, cherished rather than spurned, gazed upon rather than turned away. The vivification of a Christian imagination finds its footing in scripture, but breathes in creative work, the fruit of those whose lives have been shaped by a quiet, daily faithfulness.
