The Greatest Grace

Shamik Banerjee

Although His votarists have said, forsooth,
“Believe! Believe! For He had hung for you!”
I would gainsay their texts and hold mine true,
Not knowing I was blotting out the truth.
The man who never made it to the pool,
First questioned Him, got healing in each limb.
She, who was purged just by a shred from Him,
Was prior deemed unclean as per the rule.
These miracles, indeed, had tilled the ground
Of His religion and annealed the faith,
But I, whose bias-driven mouth had scathed
His words, the greatest of all graces found
When Jesus’ hands (when life gave naught but smart)
Comforted my (a Hindu’s) aching heart.
