Emily’s Hope

hope is the thing with feathers
fluttering alone
in the dark
it quakes under covers
throws a tiny spark

hope is the Word written
silent on the soul
pulsing past now present
the future ever untold

if hope is the thing with feathers
then maybe Emily’s a friend
we’ll clink glasses of communion wine
in white garments
we never rend
