Cup of Salvation
Cup of Salvation
Asher Silvey
From East of Eden comes the fabled cry:
Dear Abel’s blood is spilled in fields of mud—
The dirt is cold, his blood is cold and dry,
And cold the soul that spilled his brother’s blood.
The Cup is filled with terror to the brim—
Samaria will drink and gulp and down
And drain it dry until her face is grim,
When drunk with tears, she’ll tear her breasts and gown.
But in the Garden of Gethsemane
Where sweat was blood, he prays, “Your will be done.”
The goat, the Lamb! who bled on Calvary
Received the Cup to ransom everyone.
We drink his bitter blood in utter bliss
Because he gave his life to save from this.
