Watching Winter
Watching Winter
Joel Holland
the sun shows off before you want it most, returns
larger after you lose it / watermelon hues / scattered skies /
fading flurries / high-albedo hills / your yearn to stay still /
liquid moods / darkened arrays / early evening’s return
for each of us / strained eyes / underlined pages /
stiff branch bouquets fade / six-sided flakes fall /
headstrong fawns dance with traffic / light prints
left in the lawn / slow-moving neighbors / cordial waves /
the local lake’s steady crack startles greylag geese /
there will be many winters left to watch / spot the
frozen shore’s crystal conch / the breeze carries salt &
what used to be our body heat / in cars, under blankets, and
in between, there will be many winter’s left to watch / how
parking lot puddles turn to ice / ordinary nights are made
to be otherwise / your eyes are open, now.
