Underpainting
Underpainting
Lee Kiblinger
Wherever you come near the human race,
there’s layers and layers of nonsense.
— Thornton Wilder
today is an underpainting—
in season’s scumbling,
one more layer dries, opaque,
a visual humbling
until midnight blue
will shine cerulean
and the dull maroon
will only deepen
beneath the layers
of storied wait
and firm brushstrokes
of a brighter day
spread the morrow’s coat
with its holy glaze.
