Trumpets

Peter Cavallaro

I listened for God but couldn’t hear him
because the children were laughing.
So I asked him to come again soon,
but when he did (some days later)
I was mid-walk
and the birds were in full song – accursed cacophony!
There was no point in carrying on over it,
so we made another date
when I would be off work
and sleeping in.
Well, as (bad) luck would have it,
when he arrived at the appointed time
I was lying flat
and serene
in bed, freshly woke,
and could not make out his voice
over the clunking
of my heart—
pound! pound! pound!
What damned racket
distracting me from hearing
what the Lord had to say.
