The Pleiades and Orion

Megan Willome

“No, Orion! No, Pleiades!” barks a small woman
at two hulking black dogs who lunge at me.

We all walk early, before dark turns to morning,
before most dog owners set out.

I walk on the opposite side of the road.
The hunter and his prey sense dog-scent on me

though I walk without dogs.
They know the cords that bind me to Orion,

the chains that link me to seven starry daughters.
Again, day darkens into night. Some wake with divine

mercy, some slumber under constellations.
All of us made.

All of us chasing, chasing, chasing.
