The Campground
Alexandria Barbera
These are rotting
days that decline
multiple offers to
die. I asked them
why; it made no
difference, they
still wrestle the
foul smell of
abandonment,
the hard swallow
of the past and
its now darkened
ecstasies. Inside
the days are a
determined thirst
for a very specific
promiseโa green,
undying landscape,
another thrust of
power, another
shot at old glory
by way of revival.
But the bargain
with evil is never
considered: it all
comes down to
the breath of life
that rises like mist
from these weedy,
overgrown grounds.
