Lilli Ferry Ellis

I am inundated with images, swimming
in comparison: will my eyes have more twinkle
in a home with a man? my style
have more esprit?
he pours another vodka-lemonade and offers
it to me. the glass must weigh
as much as a brain, and I long for the day
it begins. whatever it is.

life does not just pick up one day and become
beautiful. it is always becoming
something from nothing, the first days, the exhaustion
of imagination that doesn’t end with pine trees
or dust bunnies or magazines.

some say something must cease
for something sparkling to sprout in its place—
I say it’s more like synapses firing,
one, after another, after another,

and onward. hoping, praying, upward, too.
but the new wood floors will collect dust
the same way these old ones do.
