A Thank You to Anger
A Thank You to Anger
Kate Chupp
My tea kettle,
filled with fallen leaves and
murky thoughts of the life
I would have planned
sputters, suppressing heat,
until it whistles high-pitched fury.
It boils and rolls
and scums off impurity—
a film of my incontrovertible God-self and
layers (and layers and layers) of despair
for all that I cannot control.
Anger boils and rolls and scums
and then—we slow down
as I pour a cup for tea,
and let warm passion cleanse me.
