For the Inklings

For the Inklings

For the Inklings

Peter Lilly

With each new language grows an alternate
Consciousness. A reversal of Babel’s
curse, to transverse the impenetrable
And gain new pictures. Do not suffocate
In the closed room of one epoch’s fables.
These heavy problems are soluble
In the same deep there has forever been.
Without urgency, save for slowing down,
Save for partaking in the stranger’s pain,
Save for soaking though, from pretense, making clean
And translucent, as a wet white gown
Clings to the skin. What we would hide, made plain.
When The Lord breathed language into our lungs
He gave the entwining of disparate tongues.
