Thus Sows the Sower
Thus Sows the Sower
Chris Carter
Thus sows the sower,
so fall the seeds
to many soils.
Some to hard earth,
a table for hungering birds.
Some to rock-strewn dirt,
quick to sprout, quick to die.
Others among thorns,
choked on barbed edge.
Yet a few land in fertile loam,
a welcome home, a skyward promise.
Again sows the sower,
anew descend the seeds
to many soils.
Some to earth,
Softened by summer rains.
Some to wealthy dirt,
Rich in stones ground by time.
Others to empty thickets
Climbing vines the barbs abandoned.
Yet a few to dying loam,
A shuttered home, an earthbound promise.
Seasons travel the same circle,
And wend toward spring again.
Consider the sower.
Sink into the soil.
Hard-packed earth,
Shallow dirt,
Thwarting thorns,
Fertile loam,
Receive what you may.
