Praise for Warm Babka
Praise for Warm Babka
Abigail Carroll
At the station café.
The pull and lurch
of the train. Traipsing
gusty blocks
to join a swaying
robed choir, glory
creased in their brows.
Prayed-over pizza
on paper plates
at, mango lemonade
cloying sweet—
cheap fuel
for our Sabbath feast.
Bratwurst
and peppers
sizzling on the wind,
floating us down
the gum-gobbed stairs
at Broadway and 51st,
hallelujahs ringing in our ears,
the winter sun far gone.
