New Flat

Sarah Collister

Cambridge, England

The floors of this flat are uneven
We know because we’ve tried to sleep
in unusual positions for two weeks now
We’ve laid on the bare floor
Trying to divine each slant and tilt
some obvious, some unknown
until a rough awakening
“Are we getting old?” I wonder
as you fidget with the heat
that’s gone out again,
its conflagration a sound
we are attuned to with dread
I know our love is not conditional
But then, what’s this feeling I have
when you pivot and dance
our wardrobe around the room?
